PERTH FILM STUDIOS ANNOUNCES FIRST PRODUCTION FILMING ON THE LOT

Perth Film Studios has welcomed its first major production to film on site, marking a significant milestone for Western Australia’s screen industry and the commencement of full studio operations. 

The Stan Original series Two Birds is the first production to shoot at the purpose‑built facility and is supported by the Western Australian Production Attraction Incentive, administered by Screenwest and designed to attract high‑profile, market‑driven screen productions to Western Australia. Two Birds is a co-production between Stan and UK broadcaster ITV, combining local and international expertise to deliver a high-end drama series. 

Two Birds is produced by BAFTA and Peabody Award‑winning producer Patrick Spence (Mr Bates vs The Post OfficeA Spy Among Friends, Stan Original The Hack) through UK production company AC Chapter One (Boy Swallows Universe), alongside Western Australian producer Martha Coleman (Stan Original Scrublands: SilverDiary of an Uber Driver) through Third Act Stories. Pre‑production is now underway. 

The series is written by Helen FitzGerald (The Cry) and Megan Palinkas (Heartbreak High). It is directed by BAFTA‑nominated James Griffiths (The Ballad of Wallis IslandMaternalEpisodes) and Corrie Chen (Stan Original Good Cop/Bad Cop). Executive Producers for Stan are Andy Ryan and Donna Chang, alongside Callum Dziedzic and Luke Speed for ITV, and James Griffiths and Helen FitzGerald. 

Filming will take place both on the Perth Film Studios lot and on location in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The series stars BAFTA Award‑winner Sheridan Smith (I Fought the LawNo ReturnThe TeacherMrs Biggs), alongside a leading Australian cast including Judy Davis (Stan Original NitramMystery Road) and Stephen Peacocke (Five BedroomsThe Newsreader). 

The production is estimated to inject more than $17 million into the Western Australian economy and directly employ more than 100 local cast and crew

Located in Malaga, Perth Film Studios is an Arts and Culture Trust venue and Western Australia’s first purpose‑built screen production facility, offering more than 90,000 square feet of sound stage space, 70,000 square feet of workshops and construction areas, a 5.7‑acre backlot, and a comprehensive suite of production support spaces. 

The arrival of Two Birds signals Perth Film Studios’ transition into full operation and reinforces Western Australia’s position as a competitive destination for film and high‑end television production. 

Throughout 2026, Perth Film Studios will host a mix of independent and government‑incentivised productions, supporting increasing levels of screen activity across Western Australia spanning scripted and documentary projects. 

Local filmmakers Karla Hart, Renee Kennedy and Nathan Gibbs are also utilising the studios as a production base for Saltwater Cowboys of Shark Bay, a documentary series for NITV and SBS. The project’s presence on site alongside Two Birds demonstrates the studio’s commitment to supporting Western Australian storytelling while welcoming large‑scale productions from interstate and overseas.
